Mercedes CLS 350 Specification

The long right-hander ahead stretches as far as I can see. Almost subconsciously, I pile a bit more pressure on the throttle. The suspension hunkers down, the rear wheels bite the tarmac a little bit harder and, apart from the increase in pace, everything remains completely calm inside the cabin. What’s immediately clear is that, though this car is based on the current E-class, the new CLS delivers a driving experience that surpasses its donor. The nearly 2.9-metre wheelbase and wide footprint give it amazing stability around longer corners, and once settled into the bend, the near-five-metre length and 1735kg kerb weight seem to somehow shrink. The Airmatic suspension lowers the ride height, the suspension gets a bit stiffer when you select Sport, and the already impressive body control tightens up even further.
The direct, electromechanical steering is lacking in feel, but it is very precise and that makes it easy to place the immense CLS in a corner quite easily, even at triple-digit speeds. However, more weight and feedback would have been welcome. Through sharper corners, it becomes apparent that the CLS is no lightweight supercar. Push it hard and the rear-wheel-drive car understeers and the ESP cuts in rapidly. Get carried away and take your eyes off the clocks, and you’ll find yourself at speeds worryingly close to the two-tonne mark. Which is why more bite and feel from the first few millimetres of brake travel would have been nice too.
It may be called a 350 like the E-class, but this motor is different. Developing a much healthier 306bhp and 37kgm of torque this creamy-smooth, direct-injection engine has ample torque right from 1500rpm. In many cars, the message from the accelerator seems to pass through a government agency and a translation service before reaching the engine. But in the CLS the right pedal and the motor seem to be connected via ESP (Extra-Sensory Perception). A light dab of the accelerator sends the CLS rolling forward smoothly. Press down with greater urgency and the motor hauls you forward briskly, and like all very torquey motors, the resulting change often pins your head to headrest. The 7G-tronic gearbox, however, is a bit slow on the downshift and using the paddles can be a bit frustrating at times. All put together, the CLS manages 0-100kph in a claimed 6.95 seconds, which is plenty quick.
Back in 2004 I dismissed the first-generation CLS as unnecessary and frumpy. But that was only until I saw it in the metal. After that I promptly fell hopelessly and nonsensically in love with it. Mercedes’ second take on the four-door coupe design is also a bit hard to swallow. Although this time, I’m giving it a more patient hearing. The new C218 CLS is attention grabbing, albeit in a technical and futuristic manner. While the last CLS’ design could be represented with just a few light strokes, the new CLS has a frenzy of highlights and a barrage of hectic lines. There is plenty of muscle here and the low roof, tight-fitting boot and the LED lamps give it a presence you just can’t ignore, and that’s just what Merc wants. Taking it easy in the CLS is quite rewarding too. In Comfort mode, a thick carpet seems to cushion the ride and passengers are not tossed around. However, some thuds over deep ruts do reveal an underlying stiffness, but that is only to be expected.
Passengers won’t feel short-changed in the CLS either. It exudes a dignified ambience, the rear seats are sculpted to feel almost like bucket seats, and though there is space only for two in the rear, this is a genuinely usable backseat that offers great underthigh support. It doesn’t hurt that the CLS has almost the same amount of legroom in the rear as an S-Class either. However, headroom is in short supply and the low roof demands some dexterity when getting in or out.
While it can be argued that the new CLS can’t top its predecessor for sheer class, there is no doubt it is a much better car. It is very attractive to look at, very quick both in a straight line and around corners, and it is very comfortable and very refined as well. It is beautifully built, will stand out as something special in any parking lot and the Rs 71.1-lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) price isn’t too bad either, considering this car looks like it could cost upwards of a crore. Wish you could buy it with a diesel though.

Mercedes SL350 Specification

Convertibles are just So special. When the weather is right, there’s no denying the charm of driving with a billion square kilometres of sky above you and the wind in your hair. Most convertibles however are not too practical in a country like ours – there’s just too much dust and paan flying around to fully enjoy the convertible experience on most days.
Not with this Merc though. With its folding metal roof, it gives you the security of a fixed roof on dusty days and, when you’re on a scenic road with a clear blue sky, it allows you to drop the top in just 16 seconds.
It’s sheer desirability that the SL350 convertible is all about. It looks stunning, especially with the hood down, and by Indian standards this is a full-fledged exotic. The long silhouette, the mean-looking front and the long bonnet result in the perfect interplay of curves and surfaces. The hard-top doesn’t take too much away from the design either – the SL looks great even
with the roof up.
However, don’t be fooled by its sporty looks. The SL, especially with this engine, is no sportscar. The 3.5-litre, 316bhp motor is the same as the one in the much lighter SLK350. You notice this when you want immediate acceleration or to overtake quickly on a two-lane road – the SL takes time to gain momentum. It is primarily the car’s substantial 1.8-tonne kerb weight at fault (more than 300kg heavier than the SLK) and the seven-speed automatic isn’t the quickest around either. In terms of outright performance, the SL350 takes 8.09sec to reach 100kph, which is no great shakes by two-seater standards, and tops out at 250kph. In-gear acceleration times are nothing spectacular either.
The key to enjoying this car is to drive it at considerably less than 100 percent. That’s when you’ll discover it has a nice, easy gait at triple-digit speeds, and that it is more than happy maintaining those speeds all day long. This chassis has a phenomenal ability to mask speed, has incredible grip and good body control, making it all the more suited to relaxed continent crossing. The effortless manner in which it cruises and its unflappable poise make this Merc feel like it’s never going to break into a sweat. The handling is also helped by the fact that this suspension hasn’t been raised to deal with Indian roads. The steering could have done with more feel but it is direct and the brakes are perfectly weighted, and you just find yourself going harder and harder without much of a problem.
The biggest surprise though is the way the SL350 takes to our potholed roads. Even the worst surfaces are dealt with well – you are comfortable in the cabin and ride quality is nothing short of outstanding. Like with most convertibles, you expect a fair amount of scuttle shake but surprisingly the SL’s body retains its composure and vibrations are kept out pretty well.
The SL’s cabin is a special place too. The large seats are exceptionally comfy and interior quality is top-class. Everything is solidly built – the buttons function with a nice damped feel and, apart from the mirror controls which feel and look cheap, there are no complaints. Luggage space is at a premium though, especially with the roof down.
Buy the SL350 for the relaxed cruiser it is. Buy it for its coupé/convertible dual-purpose nature.
Buy it if you like life at a stylish, sedate pace. If not, there are better ways to spend Rs 90 lakh.

Mercedes E63 AMG specification

At first it’s not easy to distinguish this car from your everyday E-class. The view over the bonnet with the three-pointed star bobbing lightly is the same, the levels of pampering inside the cabin are just as good and, on a light throttle, this E feels as well mannered as a crisply ironed English butler. Only occasionally, when you accelerate lightly, do you hear a distant rumble and wonder, “is that thunder or is it me?”, flexing your right foot a bit more to check. Then rear seat comfort is just as good as that on the standard car, this car is just as solidly built and acoustic refinement and sealing are also pretty impressive as well. And the cabin is tastefully trimmed in large swatches of suede or Alcantara leather.
However, pay more attention to the car and the slightly more athletic character shines through, especially from the suspension. The rear, for instance, doesn’t have that extra bit of suppleness all Mercs possess and, despite the rear suspension being air sprung, body control is tight and rigid; no hint of typical Merc wallow detectable here. It’s as if the the E is flexing its muscles a bit tighter.
Of course, all doubts about this being an ordinary E-class dissolve like paper in aqua regia as soon as the Affalterbach-built E63 AMG gets a whiff of an open road. Even a half-hearted prod on the accelerator rouses the beast under the bonnet, and then it’s down the gearbox and into the sweet spot of the power band, your back now glued to the seat as the E just runs away from you. Your head does a bit of a toss, you tighten your grip on the steering wheel and, then slowly, the corners of your mouth curl up in a smile. And that’s what AMG is all about, swapping that slightly haughty expression Merc owners have for a beaming smile but without getting rid of too much Mercedes-Benz character.
It all starts at the nose, where you have a more aggressive chin and wheel arches that have been pushed out, and carries on to the rear where four square stub exhausts tell you something evil is lurking under the hood. And, of course, does anyone make better wheels than AMG? The simple answer is no.
However, under the skin there are massive changes. The front struts, suspension arms and
anti-roll bars are totally changed from the standard E-class, the front track is much wider, the steering system has been made more direct and the wheels have been given a negative camber for more grip. Plenty of updates have been carried out to the rear suspension too, with a more rigid sub-frame added for greater stiffness.
The biggest change, however, lies under the hood. Here lurks a massively powerful 518bhp customised V8 that is redlined at a dizzy 8000rpm. And AMG has a custom seven-speed auto too; there’s no torque converter but a compact wet multi-plate start-up clutch that allows lightning-quick shifts.
So, when you really step on it and want to kick the tacho needle up into the loud part of the power band, mechanical fingers fly though the filing cabinet of gears and pluck exactly the ratio you are looking for. The motor now breathes in deep through individual throttle flutes, variable vales allow massive amounts of air into the combustion chamber and the beefed-up fuel system opens the floodgates. Now, among other things, your eyeballs get gently pushed back into their sockets, you experience a few violent gearshifts and the exhaust note changes from a NASCAR rumble to an angry snarl. Despite the mass of the car, 100kph can be dispatched in a scant 4.5 seconds and there is just no let up in thrust. Remember this isn’t just a 6208cc engine, it’s 6208cc of purpose-built menace. After 3500rpm, this car feels monumentally fast, with enough performance on tap to keep up with outwardly sportier cars.
And the performance is additive. This car trawls the rarified region between 180 and 200kph as easily as the standard car attains 100kph, and you simply never get the impression you are even close to running out of steam. On empty stretches of unrestricted autobahn, near AMG’s home in the sleepy town of Affalterbach in Germany, the manner in which the E63 slips regularly past 230kph with such ease is stupefying. Does this motor have a weakness? Well, not really, but I wish there was a bit more grunt below 3500rpm. But then I’m just being picky.
What’s completely vice-free though is the handling. Once you’ve configured the car right for the conditions, via the panel near the gear lever, and set the electrically adjusted side bolsters on the sports seat, this big saloon turns into something that feels as agile as a two-seater, as clichĂ©d as it sounds. There’s masses of feel from the quick-steering system, the front end bisects ‘too pointy’ and ‘lethargic’ bang in the middle and the car gives you so much confidence and feedback that you always feel you are going too slowly. It just corners flat and the slack-free steering places the car exactly where you want it. And that’s on long corners, through tight twisties or over and around evil dips.
That the best E-class is also the most expensive at approximately Rs 1.5 crore is a bit of a shame. But if you want something understated and suave on one hand but equally hardcore and metal on the other, this one’s for you.

A very special effect is created by the lights of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Concept, as the innovative full-LED high-performance headlamps repeat the starry sky motif with numerous lighting points. The daytime running lamps consist of 90 optical fibres with aluminium sleeves, and they are arranged in a wing-shape within the headlamp.
