Top Pages Porsche 911 review


 With the exception of a few disparate models scattered over the decades, Porsche has built its fame and fortune on a single rear-engine sports car, the 911. From rather humble beginnings, the Porsche 911 has gone on to be one of the most influential and most recognizable vehicles in the world. Today's version of the car provides stunning levels of performance without sacrificing much in terms of day-to-day usability, and many Porsche purists still consider the 911 the only "real" Porsche.

For the sports car shopper, a wide choice of drivetrains and body styles through the years means there should be a new or used 911 that fits one's desires. And although other sports cars have been able to outperform the 911 in one area or another, nothing has yet to match Porsche's overall blend of performance, practicality and that endearing connection between car and driver.

Current Porsche 911

If there's one thing you can't blame Porsche for, it's not offering enough variety. The Carrera and Turbo models are available in coupe and convertible (Cabriolet) body styles, while the Targa model is essentially a hatchback coupe with a large sunroof and rear hatch made from glass. All-wheel drive and larger rear fenders are added to the Turbo models and any 911 with "4" in its name. The bigger rear fenders are also found on the GTS and Speedster. The GT3 models and GT2 RS are coupe only, while the 911 Speedster is convertible only.

The Carrera models get a 345-horsepower 3.6-liter flat-6 engine and the S models get a 385-hp 3.8-liter flat-6. This engine produces 408 hp in the Carrera GTS and Speedster trims or when equipped with the optional Carrera S Powerkit.

Then there are the high-performance offerings: Turbo, Turbo S, GT3, GT3 RS, GT3 RS 4.0 and GT2 RS. The all-wheel-drive Turbo gets a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-6 good for 500 hp and the Turbo S gets an additional 23 horses. The rear-drive, sport-tuned GT3 has a 435-hp naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-6 and the GT3 RS is a track-ready version of the same car with 450 hp. The GT3 RS 4.0 has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo flat-6 good for 500 hp, while the outlandish GT2 RS gets a version of the Turbo S engine turned up to a truly sensational 620 hp. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on all 911 models, but optional on all but the GT3 and GT2 trims is Porsche's seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual known as PDK.

At once refined and visceral, most of the 911 variants are equally comfortable tearing through a twisty road or smoothly dealing with the daily commute. This dual nature is improved with the PDK dual-clutch automated manual gearbox, which represents the best of both transmission worlds. In manual mode, shifts are smooth and rapid, giving a level of control to the driver that the old Tiptronic auto could never approach. At the same time, PDK allows for seamless gearchanges in full-automatic mode without the herky-jerky nature of similar automated manual transmissions.

The high-performance 911 editions are less commuter-friendly, but they offer performance and handling on par with exotic supercars. Yet the "base" 911 Carrera should be more than enough, as that car will blast to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and hit a top speed approaching 180 mph.

We've never been shy about our affection for the Porsche 911 -- regardless of body style or engine -- and our complaints were few. We say "were" because Porsche addressed most of them in its most recent redesign, leaving "overpriced options" as its lone detractor.

Porsche 918 Spyder


The 918 Spyder concept combines high-tech racing features with electric-mobility to offer a fascinating range of qualities. For example, it is planned to provide an emission level of just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer on fuel consumption of only three liters/100 kilometers (equal to approximately 78 mpg U.S.), which is truly outstanding, even for an ultra-compact city car. This car, however, is intended to offer the performance of a super sports car with acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in just under 3.2 seconds, top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph), and a lap time on the Nordschleife of N ¸rburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT.

The 918 Spyder is one of three Porsche models with hybrid drive making their world debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. This trio n~ made up of Porschei´s new Cayenne S Hybrid SUV with parallel full-hybrid drive, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car with electric drive on the front axle and a flywheel mass battery, and the two-seater high-performance 918 Spyder mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology n~ clearly demonstrates not only the great bandwidth of this new drive technology, but also the innovative power of Porsche as a genuine pioneer in hybrid drive.

The highly-innovative 918 Spyder concept car combines Porschei´s Intelligent Performance philosophy with the high-technology from motorsport, with classic but modern design to make a truly convincing statement.

Race-bred V8 w/electric drive
This open two-seater is powered by a high-revving V8 developing more than 500 horsepower and a maximum engine speed of 9,200 rpm n~ as well as electric motors on the front and rear axle with overall mechanical output of 218 horsepower (160 kW).

The V8 combustion engine is the next step in the evolution of the highly successful 3.4- liter power unit already featured in the RS Spyder racing car and positioned mid-ship, in front of the rear axle, giving the car excellent balance and the right set-up for supreme performance on the race track.

Power is transmitted to the wheels by a seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission that feeds the power of the electric drive system to the rear axle. The front-wheel electric drive powers the wheels through a fixed transmission ratio.

The energy reservoir is a fluid-cooled lithium-ion battery positioned behind the passenger cell. The big advantage of a plug-in hybrid is that the battery can be charged on the regular electrical network. A further point is that the cari´s kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy fed into the battery when applying the brakes, thus providing additional energy for fast and dynamic acceleration.

Driveri´s choice of four distinct driving modes
A button on the steering wheel allows the driver to choose among four different running modes: The E-Drive mode is for running the car under electric power alone, with a range of up to 25 km or 16 miles. In the Hybrid mode, the 918 Spyder uses both the electric motors and the combustion engine as a function of driving conditions and requirements, offering a range from particularly fuel-efficient all the way to extra-powerful.

The Sport Hybrid mode uses both drive systems, but with the focus on performance. Most of the drive power goes to the rear wheels, with Torque Vectoring serving to additionally improve the cari´s driving dynamics.

In the Race Hybrid mode the drive systems are focused on pure performance with the highest standard of driving dynamics on the track, running at the limit to their power and dynamic output. With the battery sufficiently charged, a push-to-pass button feeds in additional electrical power (E-Boost), when overtaking or for even better performance.

With the hybrid drive system offering this wide range of individual modes and applications, the 918 Spyder is able either to achieve lap times comparable to those of a thoroughbred racing car, or the extremely low emissions and high fuel economy figures of a plug-in hybrid.

Advanced body design
Like the drivetrain, the lightweight body structure of the Porsche 918 Spyder also bears out the cari´s DNA carried over directly from motorsport: The modular structure with its monocoque bodyshell made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFP) and liberal use of magnesium and aluminum not only reduce weight to below 1,490 kg, or 3,285 lb, but also ensure supreme driving precision thanks to a high level of torsional stiffness.

Reminiscent of highly successful, legendary racing cars such as the Porsche 917 and the current Porsche RS Spyder, the 918 Spyder, with its design concept so typical of Porsche arouses powerful emotions. The combination of racing car dimensions, clearly structured design with perfectly balanced surfaces, and innovative details throughout, creates an ideal synthesis of form and function n~ following Porschei´s design DNA.

The smooth balance of tradition and progress gives the car a powerful stance on the road. Variable aerodynamics, typical of Porsche, ensures both visionary and traditional highlights especially around the rear spoiler. The striking rear hoods extending out of the headrests, in turn, not only fulfill an aerodynamic function on the 918 Spyder, but also accommodate retractable air intakes with a ram air function.

High-tech interior
The driver and passenger are not only embedded in contoured sports bucket seats but also form part of the cockpit, which provides a synthesis of efficient functionality and ergonomic high-tech operation. Additionally, the cockpit offers a glimpse at the potential interior architecture of future Porsche super sports cars. The three free-standing circular dials for road speed (left), engine speed (middle) and energy management (right) would appear to come directly from a racing car in the e¨60s, bearing out that unique philosophy of driver orientation so characteristic of Porsche.

The center console rises up towards the front in the 918 Spyder and houses a touch screen for intuitive control of the cari´s functions, serving to reduce the number of visible controls and maintain the principle of direct operation.

The control units relevant to the driver are mainly concentrated on the three-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel, while the variable driving modes are supplemented by a switch enabling the driver to call up various drive programs and serving as the push-to-pass button for E-boosting. Instrument illumination, finally, varies from green for the consumption-oriented running modes to red for the performance-oriented driving programs.

The Porsche 918 Spyder concept also comes with further innovative functions such as the Range Manager. After being activated in the Center Display, the Range Manager uses the map in the navigation system to present the remaining range the car is able to cover, naturally allowing the driver to influence that range through the appropriate choice of power and performance.

In cities with environmental alert areas the Range Manager also states whether the driver is able to reach a certain destination on electric power alone.



Applying this information and using further info on the availability and location of special energy filling stations, the driver is then able to choose his personal style of driving as well as the right battery charge and filling strategy.

Offering a unique combination of extremely low fuel consumption, supreme performance and long electric range, the Porsche 918 Spyder concept represents an essential milestone in Porschei´s strategy on the way to genuine electric-mobility.

Porsche 911 GT3 R



Porsche will bring its latest hybrid know-how to the racetrack in the form of the new 911 GT3 R Hybrid, revealed here for the first time prior to a planned public premiere at the Geneva auto show in early March.

Developed by a team of engineers at Porsche's Weissach R&D center, Porsche plans for the stripped-out race car to act as a rolling laboratory. The German carmaker wants to explore the potential of hybrid drivetrains in a racing environment before an expected announcement that it will return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a factory capacity, perhaps in 2012, with a race car boasting technology based on that used in the 911 GT3 R Hybrid.

Based on Porsche's recently revealed 911 GT3 RSR, the R Hybrid eschews conventional hybrid technology for an advanced new electro-mechanical flywheel system. Porsche sources said that the company is considering the system as a means of boosting the performance of its future race cars, and that the technology could end up on selected road cars, including a planned hybrid version of the 911. The new hybrid technology forms part of a broader program that goes under the name Porsche Intelligent Performance.

Similar in principle to the system that the Williams Formula One team researched last year--prior to the FIA abandoning its push for the inclusion of hybrid technology on F1 cars--the flywheel is mounted in the space usually reserved for the passenger seat on road versions of the 911 to provide the new racer with a low center of gravity.

Charged by kinetic energy created under braking and capable of operating at speeds of up to 40,000 rpm, the flywheel is used in place of a conventional battery to provide electrical energy to a pair of 60-kilowatt motors mounted within the front axle assembly and propelling the front wheels--a layout that effectively provides the 911 GT3 R Hybrid with four-wheel-drive capability.

The two motors assist the engine, a 480-hp naturally aspirated 4.0-liter version of Porsche's traditional flat-six that drives the rear wheels, providing a maximum eight-second burst of propulsion to the front wheels for added acceleration out of corners and increased overtaking ability at the press of a button.

Porsche has made no official performance claims for the 911 GT3 R Hybrid. Instead, its engineers point to the benefits its new system brings in overall fuel economy, something Porsche considers crucial to establishing a winning formula for future success in long-distance sports-car racing.



Following its unveiling at the Geneva motor show, Porsche plans to run the 911 GT3 R Hybrid in this year's Nürburgring endurance racing series, culminating with a factory-backed entry at the circuit's famed 24-hour race May 15-16.

Porsche Cayman




What is it?

Well, it isn't an ultra-lightweight, limited production road racer like the 911 R of 1967. However, we're talking about a lighter and faster Cayman S here – an already wondrous thing.

It's also worth noting that the current 911 range is due for replacement later this year, and with the £51,728 Cayman R, Porsche has allowed it to edge closer than ever to 911 Carrera levels of performance.

Technical highlights?

The R is 55kg lighter than an S. How? Slimline 19-inch wheels (from the Boxster Spyder), light aluminium door skins (a la 911 turbo), lighter sports bucket seats and 15kg is saved from the removal of the hi-fi and air-con.

An extra 9bhp has been liberated from the 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine thanks to a new exhaust manifold and ECU program. Maximum power is now rated at 325bhp at 7400rpm and a LSD is standard.

Porsche's PASM active suspension system is not fitted and the car is 20mm lower than the Cayman S thanks to shorter and stiffer springs.

A fixed rear spoiler (reducing lift by 40%) and a revised front splitter (-15% lift) is fitted, and of course the all-important PORSCHE lettering on the side that knocks a second (at least) off the 0-60mph time...

What’s it like to drive?

Having spent the week before this testing a Cayman S it has to be said that the changes are subtle. First impressions are that despite the stiffer springs and dampers the R rides beautifully. This isn't a coccyx-cracking race-rep in any way.

The engine performance feels identical, which means free revving and punchy. Can't say I noticed the extra 9bhp, but the PDK version did allow downshifts higher in the rev-range.

On road or track the R's handing balance is typically Cayman – i.e. superb. The stiffer suspension and recalibrated anti-roll bars improve body control while steering accuracy and feel is improved.

It really is a wonderful thing to rip through corners. You can lean on the brakes all the way up to the apex then nail the gas hard and early and make use of the Cayman's natural traction. The LSD hooks up nice and quickly, but not before a tiny amount of understeer – undoubtedly dialled in by the Porsche engineers as a subtle early-warning system.

How does it compare?

A non-S Lotus Evora is the only car that can match the Cayman R for performance, steering and handling feel for the price. A 911 Carrera 3.6 is over £16,000 costlier.


Anything else I should know?

Oh yes. As we've established the Cayman R does without air conditioning and a stereo as standard. Both are available as a no cost option although an upgraded climate control system costs £1040.

I'd argue air-con and a radio are essential because the Cayman R is a stunning road car. However, tick those boxes and you instantly reduce the weight saving to 40kg.

I spent a long time on the Porsche configurator playing with different options, comparing it to the S, totting up prices and weights and, and, well I got thoroughly bored. So here's the conclusion…

The Cayman S is a brilliant car. The R is a little bit more brilliant. Any cynicism about the pricing, marketing, naming and/or optioning strategy goes out the window when you drive it.

If you have saved around £51,000 to spend on a small coupe, I urge you to buy one. Just remember to save a little extra for climate control. And the ceramic brakes. And the lightweight battery. And the...

Panamera Turbo S



Porsche has unveiled the official details on the seventh model in the Panamera line-up. The new Turbo S is the most powerful version and, of course, the most expensive one as well. On the US market sales will begin later this spring with an MSRP of $173,200. The car will make its first appearance at the New York Auto Show on April 20th, 2011.

With the new Panamera Turbo S, Porsche has combined ultra high performance and efficiency, sports-car-like driving dynamics, and first-class comfort in just one car. Under the hood Porsche has placed a 4.8 liter, V8 biturbo engine that delivers an impressive 550 HP, a 50 HP improvement over the previous Turbo version. This is more than enough power to sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 190 mph. We get all of this while receiving a fuel economy of 23 mph (highway).

Throughout multiple Porsche lines, the Turbo S model has made an appearance and remains today as the range topping model. Some models are more inclined to find a buyer for an ultra-performance version, but other manufacturers have found success with the same formula. The Mercedes S-class has even more model variations than the Panamera, but even the ridiculously powerful S65 with a bi-turbo V12 has found plenty of takers. One of the biggest hurdles Porsche may face is the fact that the basic Panamera is less than beautiful and the Turbo S model is hard to distinguish.

Customers will distinguish the new Turbo S over a standard Turbo model thanks to the addition of new 20-inch Turbo II wheels with increased rear axle track width, side skirts from the Porsche Exclusive range, and the adaptive extending four-way rear spoiler matching the exterior color. Those may be distinctions from other Panamera models, but not by much. An avid car fan should be able to make the distinction, but even then we’re not sure it looks like a $173,000 car.

On the interior, the model will get a bi-color leather finish, fitted as standard, with a black/cream offered exclusively for the new Panamera Turbo S. It is interesting that Porsche has not decided to update the seats or increase the bolstering at least slightly to help make this model stand out. When you consider the car a luxury sedan rather than a typical Porsche sports car than it makes sense to not change the one part of this car that no one has an issue with, which is the interior. On the other hand, when you try to turn your luxury sedan into an Autobahn burning beast, then maybe you should spice things up a little bit more than adding a “cream” color option.

The new model will also be equipped with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), an active roll stabilization system, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and speed-dependent Servotronic. There is also a Sport Chrono Package Turbo, which tunes the suspension and power unit, making them even sportier by pressing the additional "Sport Plus" button. This is like the “M” sport button in the last generation BMW M5. Intially the car does not deploy all its horsepower and torque to the rear wheels and waits for the driver to push this button before letting loose.


Porsche Boxster


The Porsche Boxster was first introduced in the Indian car market in 2004. This two-seater combines elements of top class technology along with stylish design and exceptional performance. The car design is a real head turner. The Porsche boxster review reflects that the car has several advanced features and delivers impressive performance.


Porsche Boxster Specification

The Porsche Boxster is equipped with a 2.7L, 6-cylinder engine and this can deliver power of 245 bhp at 6500 rpm along with peak torque of 273 Nm at 4600 to 6000 rpm. The other engine variation includes 3.4L, 6-cylinder engine and this can deliver power of 295 bhp at 6350 rpm along with torque of 340 Nm at 4400 to 6000 rpm.

The base variant of the car has 5-speed transmission while the Boxster S has 6-speed transmission. The engines in this car have the VarioCam Plus technology whereby greater power is generated and this in turn improves the mileage. The car has McPherson strut suspension for the front as well as rear end and this provides stability to the car.

The handling of car is enhanced due to the variable steering ratio. The length of the car is 4329mm and its width is 1801mm while its height is 1292mm. The car has front ventilated and rear disk brakes and its kerb weight is 1355 kgs. The fuel tank capacity of the car is 64 litres.

Porsche Boxster Mileage

The 2.7L petrol engine can deliver mileage of 6 km/litre in the city while the mileage on the highway is 8.9km/litre. The 3.4L petrol engine can deliver mileage of 4.76 km/litre in the city and the mileage on the highway is 7.25 km/litre.

The interiors of the car are beautiful and have sports seats that are leather upholstered. The instrument panel of the car has a three gauge design along with premium Bose surround sound audio system. The car comes with navigation system along with parking assist. The three spoke steering wheel can be adjusted for height. The center console along with gear shift knob, steering wheel and doors have wooden finish.

The car has several advanced safety features and these include head protection airbags, electronic stability control system, Porsche side impact protection and front as well as rear roll over protection. The car also has Porsche stability management features and head as well as thorax airbags.

The price of the car is around Rs 56.50 lakhs. The car is available in two design variations and these include Porsche Boxster and Porsche Boxster S.

The interiors of the car have been designed to complement its sporty exteriors. The interiors have several features which include lightweight bucket seats. These seats are made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic. The interior color is black and has contrasting feel with seat centre section along with roof lining. The car has leather seats along with handbrake lever and gearshift with red alcantara finish. The car has air conditioner and comes with dual zone climate control feature. The driver’s seat can be electrically adjusted and the car also has dash integrated music system. The car has rake and reach steering adjustment feature and the steering has some controls and buttons.

The car is loaded with excellent safety features and these include airbags, fog lamp, parking sensors and traction control. Other features include antilock brake system, electronic brake force distribution feature and electronic stability program.

The car is expected to cost around Rs 2.30 crore and the car will be available in a single design variation.

Porsche Supercar Concept


Iranian concept car designer artist Emil Baddal has launched new renderings of the Porsche manufacture and he call this Porsche Supercar Concept. As we know Emil Baddal has typical concept design, like big inch rim, high rear bumper, huge side scoops, an aggressive front bumper and big side air vent. See my previous post about Sporty Futuristic Lamborghini X Concept by Emil Baddal. Emil Baddal apply this design on the Porsche Supercar Concept. His designs always have a sporty and muscle appearance. Porsche Supercar Concept have similarity design with  the Bugatti Veyron body and a Ferrari F430 front looks. The Porsche Supercar Concept features a huge side scoops, and a panoramic glass roof, Panamera-style headlights, LED taillights, and a bold rear diffuser. Porsche Supercar Concept is a spiritual successor to the critically acclaimed Carrera GT. He didn’t give out any further details about the car except for the photos but then again.

918 Spyder

Two other Porsche hybrids will join the Sporty Porsche 918 Spyder on the stand at Geneva, including the Cayenne hybrid and the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car, which uses a F1-derived KERS kinetic hybrid system.

 Porsche has unveiled Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid at 2010 Geneva auto show. Porsche has applied its latest hybrid technology to create a spectacular all-wheel-drive racing car, the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid.  The innovative hybrid technology featured in the car has been developed especially for racing, standing out significantly in its configuration and components from conventional hybrid systems. Based on Porsche‘s recently revealed 911 GT3 RSR, the R Hybrid eschews conventional hybrid technology for an advanced new electro-mechanical flywheel system. The new hybrid technology forms part of a broader program that goes under the name Porsche Intelligent Performance. Porsche has made no official performance claims for the 911 GT3 R Hybrid.   The 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be used as what the Porsche engineers describe as a “racing laboratory” to gather knowledge about hybrid drive under the pressure of a racing environment. In a departure from conventional battery-based electric systems used for hybrid drive by makers of both street cars and even racing cars, the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid features a flywheel system. The electric motors provide a burst of 120 kilowatts (161 horsepower) to the front wheels, supplementing the 911 GT3 R Hybrid’s 480-hp 4.0-liter flat-6 that powers the rear wheels. Meanwhile, Porsche’s new purpose-built racing car with hybrid technology is expected to be prepared for the 2012 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, when the race’s regulations will favor hybrid racing cars.

New Sporty Porsche Cayman R Coupe


Porsche has unveiled at the 2010 Los Angeles auto show the new Sporty Porsche Cayman R Coupe. The Sporty Porsche Cayman R Coupe is powered by a supped up 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine developing 330 hp (243 kW). Porsche has announced the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS on May 12, 2011 at ATLANTA. 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS is the all-wheel-drive Carrera models, and when equipped with the proper tires, this sportcar has proven more than competent for all seasons and all road conditions.

The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS wraps an aggressive wide body around a long list of performance, comfort and cosmetic enhancements. 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS will be distinguished by the GTS lettering on the doors and rear lid, a reflective stripe between the taillights, and a new set of 19? RS Spyder wheels in black with central locking and gloss-lathed rim flanges fitted with 305/30 ZR 19 tires on the rear axle. Customers will also have the possibility to opt for a Sport-Design front apron with black painted spoiler lip and special side skirts, also in black.

The fuel consumption remains similar to the Porsche Carrera 4S version: 11.0 l/100 km (25.7 mpg imp.) for the coupe and 11.2 l/100 km (25.2 mpg imp) for the cabrio version.

The most impressive feature of the new 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS model is the PTM all-wheel drive system that adds even more driving stability, traction, and agile handling. The Porsche Traction Management (PTM) achieves this by directing the optimal proportion of the engine torque to the front wheels via a multiple-plate clutch.

The new 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS will go on sale in July with prices for the German market starting from 111,956 euro (about $160,000 at the current exchange rates) for the coupe and 122,071 euro ($175,000) for the convertible version. Porsche will launch the 2012 Porsche 911 Sport coupe car, Return with many upgrde feature.  The 2012 Porsche 911 has a body slightly longer on foot with the headlights. The side mirrors are positioned near the door, instead of windows. The longer the body induce a strong nose section of the car that would offer a section for larger cars and more compressible. To provide better aerodynamics, the rear of the car also changes.

To improve speed, all 911 will be available with an engine stop / start and regenerative braking system. These additions should allow the 2012 911 Porsche to consume 12% less fuel when driving in the city.
