Mercedes SL350 Specification

Convertibles are just So special. When the weather is right, there’s no denying the charm of driving with a billion square kilometres of sky above you and the wind in your hair. Most convertibles however are not too practical in a country like ours – there’s just too much dust and paan flying around to fully enjoy the convertible experience on most days.
Not with this Merc though. With its folding metal roof, it gives you the security of a fixed roof on dusty days and, when you’re on a scenic road with a clear blue sky, it allows you to drop the top in just 16 seconds.
It’s sheer desirability that the SL350 convertible is all about. It looks stunning, especially with the hood down, and by Indian standards this is a full-fledged exotic. The long silhouette, the mean-looking front and the long bonnet result in the perfect interplay of curves and surfaces. The hard-top doesn’t take too much away from the design either – the SL looks great even
with the roof up.
However, don’t be fooled by its sporty looks. The SL, especially with this engine, is no sportscar. The 3.5-litre, 316bhp motor is the same as the one in the much lighter SLK350. You notice this when you want immediate acceleration or to overtake quickly on a two-lane road – the SL takes time to gain momentum. It is primarily the car’s substantial 1.8-tonne kerb weight at fault (more than 300kg heavier than the SLK) and the seven-speed automatic isn’t the quickest around either. In terms of outright performance, the SL350 takes 8.09sec to reach 100kph, which is no great shakes by two-seater standards, and tops out at 250kph. In-gear acceleration times are nothing spectacular either.
The key to enjoying this car is to drive it at considerably less than 100 percent. That’s when you’ll discover it has a nice, easy gait at triple-digit speeds, and that it is more than happy maintaining those speeds all day long. This chassis has a phenomenal ability to mask speed, has incredible grip and good body control, making it all the more suited to relaxed continent crossing. The effortless manner in which it cruises and its unflappable poise make this Merc feel like it’s never going to break into a sweat. The handling is also helped by the fact that this suspension hasn’t been raised to deal with Indian roads. The steering could have done with more feel but it is direct and the brakes are perfectly weighted, and you just find yourself going harder and harder without much of a problem.
The biggest surprise though is the way the SL350 takes to our potholed roads. Even the worst surfaces are dealt with well – you are comfortable in the cabin and ride quality is nothing short of outstanding. Like with most convertibles, you expect a fair amount of scuttle shake but surprisingly the SL’s body retains its composure and vibrations are kept out pretty well.
The SL’s cabin is a special place too. The large seats are exceptionally comfy and interior quality is top-class. Everything is solidly built – the buttons function with a nice damped feel and, apart from the mirror controls which feel and look cheap, there are no complaints. Luggage space is at a premium though, especially with the roof down.
Buy the SL350 for the relaxed cruiser it is. Buy it for its coupé/convertible dual-purpose nature.
Buy it if you like life at a stylish, sedate pace. If not, there are better ways to spend Rs 90 lakh.

Mercedes E63 AMG specification

At first it’s not easy to distinguish this car from your everyday E-class. The view over the bonnet with the three-pointed star bobbing lightly is the same, the levels of pampering inside the cabin are just as good and, on a light throttle, this E feels as well mannered as a crisply ironed English butler. Only occasionally, when you accelerate lightly, do you hear a distant rumble and wonder, “is that thunder or is it me?”, flexing your right foot a bit more to check. Then rear seat comfort is just as good as that on the standard car, this car is just as solidly built and acoustic refinement and sealing are also pretty impressive as well. And the cabin is tastefully trimmed in large swatches of suede or Alcantara leather.
However, pay more attention to the car and the slightly more athletic character shines through, especially from the suspension. The rear, for instance, doesn’t have that extra bit of suppleness all Mercs possess and, despite the rear suspension being air sprung, body control is tight and rigid; no hint of typical Merc wallow detectable here. It’s as if the the E is flexing its muscles a bit tighter.
Of course, all doubts about this being an ordinary E-class dissolve like paper in aqua regia as soon as the Affalterbach-built E63 AMG gets a whiff of an open road. Even a half-hearted prod on the accelerator rouses the beast under the bonnet, and then it’s down the gearbox and into the sweet spot of the power band, your back now glued to the seat as the E just runs away from you. Your head does a bit of a toss, you tighten your grip on the steering wheel and, then slowly, the corners of your mouth curl up in a smile. And that’s what AMG is all about, swapping that slightly haughty expression Merc owners have for a beaming smile but without getting rid of too much Mercedes-Benz character.
It all starts at the nose, where you have a more aggressive chin and wheel arches that have been pushed out, and carries on to the rear where four square stub exhausts tell you something evil is lurking under the hood. And, of course, does anyone make better wheels than AMG? The simple answer is no.
However, under the skin there are massive changes. The front struts, suspension arms and
anti-roll bars are totally changed from the standard E-class, the front track is much wider, the steering system has been made more direct and the wheels have been given a negative camber for more grip. Plenty of updates have been carried out to the rear suspension too, with a more rigid sub-frame added for greater stiffness.
The biggest change, however, lies under the hood. Here lurks a massively powerful 518bhp customised V8 that is redlined at a dizzy 8000rpm. And AMG has a custom seven-speed auto too; there’s no torque converter but a compact wet multi-plate start-up clutch that allows lightning-quick shifts.
So, when you really step on it and want to kick the tacho needle up into the loud part of the power band, mechanical fingers fly though the filing cabinet of gears and pluck exactly the ratio you are looking for. The motor now breathes in deep through individual throttle flutes, variable vales allow massive amounts of air into the combustion chamber and the beefed-up fuel system opens the floodgates. Now, among other things, your eyeballs get gently pushed back into their sockets, you experience a few violent gearshifts and the exhaust note changes from a NASCAR rumble to an angry snarl. Despite the mass of the car, 100kph can be dispatched in a scant 4.5 seconds and there is just no let up in thrust. Remember this isn’t just a 6208cc engine, it’s 6208cc of purpose-built menace. After 3500rpm, this car feels monumentally fast, with enough performance on tap to keep up with outwardly sportier cars.
And the performance is additive. This car trawls the rarified region between 180 and 200kph as easily as the standard car attains 100kph, and you simply never get the impression you are even close to running out of steam. On empty stretches of unrestricted autobahn, near AMG’s home in the sleepy town of Affalterbach in Germany, the manner in which the E63 slips regularly past 230kph with such ease is stupefying. Does this motor have a weakness? Well, not really, but I wish there was a bit more grunt below 3500rpm. But then I’m just being picky.
What’s completely vice-free though is the handling. Once you’ve configured the car right for the conditions, via the panel near the gear lever, and set the electrically adjusted side bolsters on the sports seat, this big saloon turns into something that feels as agile as a two-seater, as clichéd as it sounds. There’s masses of feel from the quick-steering system, the front end bisects ‘too pointy’ and ‘lethargic’ bang in the middle and the car gives you so much confidence and feedback that you always feel you are going too slowly. It just corners flat and the slack-free steering places the car exactly where you want it. And that’s on long corners, through tight twisties or over and around evil dips.
That the best E-class is also the most expensive at approximately Rs 1.5 crore is a bit of a shame. But if you want something understated and suave on one hand but equally hardcore and metal on the other, this one’s for you.

BMW 520d

The earlier-generation BMW 5-series was, by far, the largest selling car in its segment. A lot of this was down to the success of the earlier 520d. The carmaker has now introduced a cheaper diesel variant. The 520d, unlike the 525d or the 530d, is powered by a smaller 2.0-litre engine. But will this motor do justice to luxury car buyers?
The engine is a turbo-charged, four-cylinder unit that displaces 1995cc, similar to the one in the 320d and old 520d. With 184bhp and 38.7kgm, performance is surprisingly good. It is responsive too, and helps make the car very driveable in urban traffic. Throttle response is almost instantaneous and you won’t be left wanting for more power in most situations. The Five cruises comfortably on the highway but this diesel’s forte is its petrol motor-like top end. Unlike most diesels, this one doesn’t mind being revved, which reveals its true BMW colours. Maximum torque comes from 1900-2750rpm and since this is where you reside most of the time, overtaking is a breeze, the eight-speed auto downshifting quickly when you floor the throttle. The well-matched, closely stacked gear ratios also help disguise this car’s displacement deficit. Of course, it’s no match for the 530d’s far more potent 3.0-litre engine, but it does the job nicely.
The performance figures speak for themselves – 100kph comes up in a very brisk 9.09 seconds while the car will hit its top speed without breaking into a sweat. Thanks to the quick-shifting eight-speed gearbox, the in-gear times too are pretty impressive.
If you are primarily chauffeur-driven and only occasionally take to the wheel, this engine will more than suffice. However, refinement and comfort, which are a priority in the rear seat, is where the 520d falls a little short. The engine is quite refined, but it can’t compare to the 530d’s silky-smooth six-cylinder motor. You will notice that it is more audible at idle and vibrates a tad more. It becomes a bit vocal too when worked hard.
There are few changes to the cabin – the beige colour and superb quality remain, making it a nice place to be in. Material quality and craftmanship are fantastic. The soft suspension setup remains, which means ride quality is very good and the car tackles rutted roads at low speed really well. But handling suffers and the car rolls and pitches a bit when you turn enthusiastic. Overall, the 520d feels in control  and you can rate its handling safe but boring.
With sufficient power and a lower asking price, the 520d makes a strong case for itself.  At Rs 36.90 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) it costs just Rs 5.3 lakh more than a 320d Highline. So for some it may make sense to stretch their budget a little and go for the bigger, and in many ways, better car. With a smaller engine and lighter kerb weight compared to the 530d, fuel efficiency should be better.
If performance is your priority, the 530d with 243bhp on tap will give you a bigger adrenaline rush and effortless performance. For all other purposes, the 520d will do nicely.

Tata Safari Storme

Tata has had its hands busy ever since its Jaguar-Land Rover deal, as it was able to inject unprecedented power into its cars. The first example of this was Tata Aria, and the upcoming Tata Safari Storme is expected to be on the same lines. It is expected that the car will be launched in two variants – 4X2 and 4X4; this will surely render the manufacturer with numerous fans who want something other than the 4X4 Mahindra Scorpio.
This car has been in development for the past two years and has seen two facelifts and four engines. It will be the refurbished version of the Tata Safari; it will be known as Safari Storme. However, it is expected that this car will be sold alongside the original variant and will bridge the gap between Safari and Aria.
Taking a cue from Tata Aria, this car will deliver a premium experience to Indian customers. This car is expected to have upgraded gearbox, steering and suspension compared to that of the original Safari. In fact, Safari Storme should exhibit improvements upon the Safari in all aspects, thus providing the customers with a whole new car with a familiar, high performing engine.
Engines & Specifications of the Tata Safari Storme
The engine of the upcoming Tata Safari Storme will be same 2.2 L DiCOR diesel engine used in the original Safari. It is reported that the manufacturer was also experimenting with a 3.0 L diesel engine, though it did not deliver satisfactory results. A V6 petrol engine was also being tested for this car, though it won’t be installed when it launches next year. The engine should easily deliver a power of 140 bhp at 4000 rpm and a torque of 320 Nm at 1700 rpm, just like its sibling.
Performance of the Tata Safari Storme
With experience of Tata Safari and technology from J-LR under its belt, Tata is expected to ensure that Safari Storme will be an excellent performer in city as well as highway conditions. The vehicle will feature a 5 speed transmission gear system and improved Powertrain package, which are expected to contribute to the overall performance of the car. It will also make use of the X2 platform, which is known for enabling hydro-forming chassis sections. Nevertheless, if Tata Safari Storme wants to compete with SUVs like Mahindra XUV500 and Force Once, it will have to deliver excellent performance on all parameters.
Exterior, Interior & Safety Features of the Tata Safari Storme
The exteriors of the car sport a refurbished look on the front and rear, though the sides are largely reminiscent of the Safari. The car will have a lower hood as compared to the original Safari, and the curves of the Safari have been replaced with a boxy look, quite similar to the Land Rover's. However, the biggest change in the Tata Safari Storme will be the placement of the spare wheel; the wheel will now be placed below the boot, instead of the fifth door. In terms of dimensions, it will be 4650 mm in length, 1918 mm wide and 1925 mm in height.
The interiors of this car are supposed to be quite similar to that of Tata Aria, which reflect opulence from the core. Some of the features that customers can expect in this car are power windows, remote-controlled central locking, remote fuel filler and leather seats. Sun roof, steering-based controls, electric door mirrors on both sides, rear wiper and rear defogger should be some of the functional amenities provided in the Tata Safari Storme.
The car will be equipped with 4 airbags, parking sensors, fog lamps, traction control mechanism, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) for optimum safety.
